Our recent paper “Bit Error Rate in WDM Data Transmission Links with Semiconductor Optical Amplifier”  is now published in IEEE Journal of Lightwave Technology (DOI: 10.1109/JLT.2024.3475885). In this work we explore the applicability of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) for the data stream amplification in the modern WDM optical links. We perform comprehensive experimental investigation using state of the art optical transceivers and measure bit error rate (BER) for different data rates, optical powers, number of channels and for PAM4 and NRZ modulation formats. We developed general theory providing analytical expression for BER for arbitrary IM/DD modulation format and accounting all experimental findings. On the base of this research we can claim Innolume WDM SOA as the most suitable for the data stream amplification as they provide low noise figure and the highest on the market saturation output power, these are the key SOA parameters for the data transmission.

BER vs. Tx Power for 400 Gb/s PAM4 with and without SOA, showing 13 dB improvement
