Free-Space Single-Mode Lasers

Innolume offers a broad portfolio of high power, spatial single-mode laser diodes of any wavelength in the 780nm to 1340nm range. Devices with a free-space beam are available packaged in a 9-mm TO-can or on submount.

Lasers provide Polarization Extinction Ratio (PER) of typically >18dB. Laser diodes may be configured to operate in CW (up to 500mW) or in pulsed mode.

Especially designed for seeding application, Innolume pulse laser diode features up to 1.5W of low noise peak optical power, broadened spectrum allows to suppress Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) in high power fiber lasers.

Each laser diode product line has passed a qualification procedure to prove high reliability. All supplied lasers are accompanied by a detailed outgoing inspection report.

Any customized wavelength from the 1000-1330 nm range is possible. Please, contact us for the details.

The difference between a single mode laser and multi-mode laser

Laser diodes offer a variety of functions as well as specifications: They can either operate in multi-mode, in which the laser light of several different oscillation modes is projected simultaneously, or in single mode, which uses only one oscillation mode. The latter one offers not only point symmetry, but also an excellent TEM00 beam profile. Due to this, the single mode laser diode is frequently used in applications such as sensors as well as optical disc drives.

The beam of a single mode laser is concentrated in a single point. This beam allows finer and higher quality marking than a multi-mode beam, since the multi-mode laser has an uneven power distribution.

Advantages and disadvantages of single mode laser diodes

The energy of the single-mode laser diode is highly collimated: After the same laser power is focused by the same optical device, the energy of the single mode laser at the focal point is much higher than the energy of the multi-mode laser. Comparing the beam quality, the diameter of the focal point, the divergence, and the power density of the focal point, single mode lasers perform better than multi-mode lasers regarding these specifications.

However, the single mode laser also has some disadvantages compared to the multi-mode laser: Conventional single mode lasers contain a very thin fiber core and as a result, the nonlinear effect of the single mode laser is relatively large. In addition, the single mode laser does not support the transmission of multiple modes simultaneously.
