Unico project launch

Since November 1st, Innolume has been coordinating the joint project UNICO, which won total funding of 2.5 million Euros for 2.5 years as part of the European Innovation Council's “Transition Challenge 2023”. UNICO stands for universal frequency-comb platform for datacenter communications. Together with the Swiss start-up Enlightra, we aim to build O-band (~ 1300nm) transceiver components targeted for applications in AI clusters and datacentres. Innolume works on the development of GaAs DBR-Comb lasers (with “narrow” line spacing: 25 - 100 GHz) suitable for the integration into silicon on insulator (SOI) and also on Comb-SOAs to compensate for the power losses in the SOI chip. Enlightra works on microcomb lasers (with “wide” line spacing: 100 - 1000 GHz) and the SOI modulator chip. They are supported by the Swiss government with 1.4 Million Euro for joining the UNICO project. Our partners from the “Radio and Optical Communications Laboratory” group from Dublin City University will test and qualify the transceiver components and system. With this project, we aim to advance the development of III-V integration into SOI and attract big potential customers like Nvidia and Google.

The UNICO Kick-Off meeting took place on November 7th and 8th in Dortmund and included a laboratory and cleanroom tour for our guests.

UNICO Project made its debut at OFC 2024 from March 26th to March 28th. Team members showcased the project's scope by distributing informative flyers at both the Innolume and Enlightra booths. Notably, Enlightra presented an exciting interim achievement: the successful generation of the new O-band microcomb laser.
