On October 29, 2024, we presented at the EPIC Online Technology Meeting with a keynote talk titled “Quantum Dot Lasers: A Step Toward Easier Integration with Photonic Integrated Circuits”. The presentation outlined the critical advantages of Quantum Dot (QD) lasers that position them as an ideal continuous wave (CW) light source for Optical Engines based on Silicon Photonics and TFLN.

QD laser timeline showing InAs QDs, VCSEL, comb laser, Innolume, with benefits like low noise and temperature stability

InGaAs/GaAs Quantum Dot Lasers and SOAs are gaining significant traction and are expected to play a crucial role in providing cost-effective and reliable optical interconnect solutions, meeting the disruptive growth in demand for high-volume data transmission, especially in the context of billions of 100 and 200 Gbps optical channels projected in the near future.

Key Advantages Highlighted:

  • Optical Isolator Unnecessary: QD lasers naturally resist back reflections, simplifying heterogeneous integration with Silicon Photonics PICs.
  • Temperature Stability: Demonstrated high power and efficiency at temperatures above 100°C.
  • Extended Reliability with No Early-Life Failures: Preliminary data indicate that QD lasers do not experience early-life failures. Once validated for high-volume manufacturing, this advantage will significantly simplify overall burn-in procedures.
  • Ability to Build Multi-π›Œ Chips: Supports the creation of high-yield, high-count DFB arrays, comb lasers, and WDM SOAs with ultra-low noise.
  • Better Manufacturability and Cost-Effectiveness: GaAs wafer processing offers superior manufacturability compared to InP-based technologies due to less fragility and the availability of low-cost 6-inch wafers.
